At a glance: Samsung charging slowly

  • Is the plug of the charging cable inserted correctly?
  • Check whether the charging cable or power supply unit is faulty
  • For Samsung mobile phones that support fast charging, choose a charging adapter with a sufficiently large power output
  • Switch off power-hungry functions such as background app refresh
  • Activate fast charging in the Samsung settings
  • Why does my Samsung mobile phone charge so slowly?

If your Samsung mobile phone charges slowly, a faulty charging cable or charger could be the problem. See whether your Samsung charges faster with another cable or power supply unit. Take a look at the housing to see whether your charger provides sufficient watts of power output for your Samsung with the fast-charge function. Newer Samsung mobile phones can be charged to 60% in 30 minutes with a 25-watt fast charger.

  • How can I tell whether the rechargeable battery of my Samsung mobile phone is faulty?

To tell whether the rechargeable battery of your Samsung smartphone is faulty, you should pay attention to the following warning signs: The rechargeable battery is drained more quickly than normal or the charge suddenly decreases; the rechargeable battery gets unusually hot or bulges. The latter is a sure sign that something isn’t right. You should immediately switch off your Samsung and have the rechargeable battery checked by a professional.

Hardware: The right accessories

If your Samsung is charging slowly, you should first test whether the charging cable or power supply unit are faulty. In our post Mobile phone charging slowly, find out what exactly you should do.

By the way, a soiled charging socket is practically never the cause of slow charging for Samsung mobile phones. Thanks to the design, the contacts in the USB-C port are well protected. Only if your mobile phone no longer charges at all should you also look at whether you need to clean the charging socket of your Samsung.

Use the right charging cable and power supply unit: Your Samsung might be charging slowly because you are not using the original charging accessories for your Samsung model. However, power supply units are no longer supplied with newer Samsung models.

When purchasing a new power supply unit (as well as when using the charger and cable from a predecessor model), you should thus make sure that this optimally supports the charging technology of your Samsung model. Your Samsung mobile phone might be charging slowly because your (old) charger provides too little power. The power is stated in watts on the charger and you can see how many watts the rechargeable battery tolerates in the manual for your mobile phone. For newer Samsung models with the fast-charge function, a fast charger such as the USB-C charger for mobile phones, Power Delivery (PD)/Qualcomm®, 25 watts is suitable.

Software and power-hungry apps

If your Samsung rechargeable battery charges slowly, the cause may be background app refresh. Even if you are not actively using the apps at the moment, they download data or send messages, such as push notifications about e-mails. All of this also consumes power during charging.

It may help to temporarily deactivate this background data if your Samsung is charging slowly. Depending on the Android version, you can find the function in a different place in the settings. For example, from Android 7, here: Settings > Network & Internet > Data usage and then activate Data Saver mode.

Tip for Samsung Galaxy models such as the S10 or A40

If a model such as your Samsung Galaxy S10 or A40 charges slowly, you should see whether the Quick-Charge function is activated in the settings. These models support fast charging if the function is switched on and you are using suitable fast-charging accessories. Check the current setting under Device Care > Battery > More Battery Settings > Fast Charging via cable if your Samsung Galaxy is charging slowly.

Notification: Slow charging

Notification: Slow charging

On some Samsung mobile phones, the following notification appears on the display when you insert the charging cable: “Slow charging. Make sure charger is properly connected. Use charger that came with the device.”

This can mean that the plug is not sitting in the socket correctly. Pull it out again and then reinsert it. Another reason may be that you are using a power supply unit with too few watts of power output for a mobile phone with the fast-charge function . Newer-generation Samsung mobile phones are able to draw much more power than some chargers deliver, e.g. those with 10 watts.

Samsung mobile phones in the series Galaxy S, Galaxy A and Galaxy Note, which support fast charging, can reach 60% in 30 minutes with a fast charger, such as the USB-C charger for mobile phones, Power Delivery (PD)/Qualcomm®, 25 watts .
