What does MagSafe mean?

The meaning of the term MagSafe can be explained quickly. MagSafe is made up of two words: “magnet” and “safe”. This applies in two ways when it comes to the Apple technology. The MagSafe magnets hold the iPhone securely on compatible charging stations and iPhone holders, as well as ensuring the ideal positioning of the device for inductive charging. You can thus be safe in the knowledge that iPhones are always optimally charged wirelessly with MagSafe.

How does MagSafe work?

But what exactly is MagSafe from Apple and how does it work? One key MagSafe function is the perfect positioning of the iPhone 16, iPhone 15, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 and the like on a MagSafe-compatible charging station. This is important because the induction coils in an iPhone charging station only create a small magnetic field, within which electricity can flow into the iPhone battery.

The better the iPhone is positioned within this magnetic field, the more efficiently it charges wirelessly. MagSafe thus works with specially arranged magnets that automatically position the iPhone accurately. You simply need to place your iPhone 12 or a newer model on a MagSafe-compatible charging station. Due to the magnetic pull, your smartphone always lies in the ideal position for charging.

What does MagSafe offer?

Alongside ideal positioning on charging stations, MagSafe offers other advantages. For instance, you can also use the power of magnets in the car. If you are using a MagSafe-compatible car phone holder, you simply need to dock your iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 to it. The magnets keep it in place – even on twisty journeys.

You also benefit from a fast wireless charging speed. For clarification: Older iPhones can only be charged with a maximum of 7.5 watts via the Qi standard. MagSafe-compatible chargers also ensure this speed. There are also products with the label Made for MagSafe. These are fitted with a chip set certified by Apple and offer wireless charging speeds of up to 15 watts.
